When we lost Sam in September 2025, our family faced a choice that most families never make. We could stay silent about what we had been through, or we could tell the truth.
A Choice After We Lost Sam
Sam had faced substance use disorder with extraordinary courage and honesty. He talked about it openly. He refused to hide. He taught everyone around him that the opposite of addiction is not sobriety - it is community. And he reminded us daily that it is okay not to be okay.
The Post Heard Around the Country
After Sam passed, I wrote one honest post on LinkedIn about what our family had been through. I did not plan it. I did not strategize. I just told the truth.

Nearly 2,000 reacted. 484 left comments. And the message, over and over, was the same: "I thought I was the only one."
That line changed everything for me. Hundreds of families, all carrying the same weight, all in silence, all convinced they were alone. They were not alone. They just could not see each other because nobody was talking.
Four Commitments
So we built Sam's OATH. Not a treatment program. Not a support group. A movement. Four commitments that give families a framework for moving from silence to community:
Openness. To speak honestly about what your family has experienced. Authenticity. To show up as you truly are. Togetherness. To stand with others, because no one should face this alone. Healing. To pursue growth and hope for yourself and those you love.
Why a Map Matters
