Sam crossing the finish line

For people affected by a loved one's substance use or mental health challenges, and for those who stand beside them

What's Hidden Doesn't Heal.

Fear, embarrassment, uncertainty, and judgment cause too many people to carry these experiences in silence. Sam's OATH offers a different way forward.

Encouraging Openness. Inspiring Healing.

What is Sam's OATH?

A path from openness to healing.

Sam's OATH is a movement for people affected by a loved one's substance use or mental health challenges, and for those who stand beside them. It encourages Openness, Authenticity, Togetherness, and Healing as alternatives to silence, stigma, and isolation.

OATH is a practice people can return to whenever silence, fear, or isolation begin taking too much space.
O

Openness

Make room for honest conversation.

Speak honestly about your own experience and make room for real conversation.

A

Authenticity

Acknowledge what this is really like.

Make room for love, fear, grief, exhaustion, uncertainty, and hope without pretending to have all the answers.

T

Togetherness

Allow support and stand beside others.

Let others walk beside you, and offer that same respectful presence to someone else.

H

Healing

Make room for healing, including your own.

Healing may include hope, boundaries, grief, rest, growth, connection, compassion, or repair.

Openness→Authenticity→Togetherness→Healing

Openness makes Authenticity possible. Authenticity creates Togetherness. Togetherness creates the conditions for Healing.

Why this matters

These experiences touch millions of lives. Too many people carry them alone.

Substance use and mental health challenges affect far more people than the individual experiencing them.

Families, friends, coworkers, and supporters carry fear, uncertainty, grief, and isolation too.

You are not alone.

People choosing OATH

Participants are choosing to embrace Openness, Authenticity, Togetherness, and Healing. Some use a first name, initials, a nickname, or Anonymous. The choice to embrace OATH is what matters.

Stand beside someone

Sometimes the supporter needs support too.

Friends, coworkers, neighbors, relatives, and others can practice OATH by making honest conversation safer for a supporter.

What Sam Showed Me About Pretending

“Sam was one of the first people who refused to pretend with me.”

Stand beside someone

Encouragement

You do not need the same experience or perfect words to remind someone that another person understands.

To the parent awake at 3 a.m.

“You are not a bad parent. You are a parent who loves someone deeply.”

To the friend who does not know what to say

“Showing up is the answer. You do not need perfect words.”

The story that inspired the movement

Sam lived with uncommon openness.

Sam spoke honestly about parts of life many people hide, showed up authentically, and found strength in the people who walked beside Sam.

Sam's life showed that silence can deepen suffering, connection matters, and one person's honesty can give someone else courage.
