The story behind Sam's OATH

Sam's Story

Sam's OATH began with one family's experience, but it exists for millions of people affected by a loved one's substance use or mental health challenges, and for those who stand beside them.

Who Sam was

Sam was many things before he was anything else.

A son. A brother. A friend. Someone who connected with people from every walk of life and had a way of making people feel seen.

People remember Sam as adventurous, honest, brilliant, deeply authentic, and fully human. The people who loved Sam remember curiosity, humor, openness, and a gift for real connection.

Sam's life cannot be reduced to one struggle or one ending. The movement begins with the fuller person people knew and loved.

What happened

Sam faced substance use disorder during life. Like many families, Sam's family experienced fear, uncertainty, hope, setbacks, love, and difficult choices along the way.

On September 28, 2025, Sam died following a tragic accident. The loss was devastating.

Sam's OATH grew from what the family learned before and after that loss. The story is not only about what happened to Sam. It is also about what happened when the family finally spoke openly about an experience that had often been carried quietly.

What silence costs

Silence can feel protective. It can also leave people alone.

There were conversations the family had and conversations the family avoided. There were details shared and experiences carried privately. Like millions of other families, silence sometimes seemed safer, less complicated, and less likely to invite judgment.

Over time, silence brought another cost: isolation, shame, and the sense that nobody else could possibly understand.

Silence does not protect people. Silence isolates them.

FearWhat will people think?
UncertaintyWhat are we supposed to do?
EmbarrassmentWhat if people see us differently?
IsolationWho could possibly understand?

The conversation that changed everything

One honest post opened a much larger conversation.

Shortly after Sam's death, Frank shared a personal post on LinkedIn. The post described Sam's courage, honesty, open heart, and the family's experience with substance use disorder.

“I share his story not only to honor his remarkable life, but also to offer experience, strength, and hope to anyone struggling — or supporting a loved one — through similar battles. You are not alone.”

The response was unlike anything the family expected. The response was not about the facts alone. It was about the honesty. Parents, siblings, partners, friends, coworkers, and others began sharing experiences that had often remained unspoken.

Why OATH was created

The silence was widespread. OATH became the response.

The conversation revealed people everywhere carrying similar experiences. Sam's OATH was created to encourage a different response: Openness, Authenticity, Togetherness, and Healing.

OATH asks people affected by a loved one's substance use or mental health challenges, and those who stand beside them, to choose honesty over hiding, real connection over isolation, and room for healing over shame.
